Rehabilitated Dishware

I usually only blog about recipes that I have cooked but I came across New York artist Sarah Cihat’s work via an environmental blog yesterday and am amazed at her work. Sarah buys old crockery from charity shops such the Goodwill or Salvation Army and redesigns them with bold silhouettes and coloured glaze over the original design, the crocks are then refired and sold.

Sarah started rehabilating dishware as part of her thesis project to make a statement about the importance of recycling and the value of unwanted possessions. I am a huge fan of reusing items before recycling and love this project.

Sadly Sarah’s work does not seem to be available yet in the UK when it is I will be first in the queue to buy a few pieces.

  1. what an excellent idea – I love bold colours in cookware – I know it is meant to be white so as not to overshadow the food but colours are so fun! Would love to see this on sale in Melbourne!

  2. There is an artist in the UK called Caroline Till who does a similar thing. You can see them at http://printpattern.blogspot.com/2007/10/designer-caroline-till.html

  3. Johanna – I have just bought a stack of patterned plates in a charity shop, that I think look fantastic with food on them, and certianly make the photos look more interesting.

Fiona – thanks for the link – I will investigate her work.

  4. Aren’t those ever lovely! Thanks for sharing these, enjoyed seeing them.
