Fruit & Vegetable Co-op: #8 – or What to do with Turnips?
Another bumper haul from my local fruit & vegetable Co-op. All this wonderful produce for only £6! For details of finding your local food Co-op see here, or why not set your own up if you do not have a co-op near to you. Sadly, food poverty is a real problem in parts of the UK, but by joining together and bulk buying as a group, huge savings can be obtained and passed down to the consumer, making fresh fruit and vegetables affordable and available everyday to everyone regardless of their income level.

Meanwhile, does anyone have any good turnip recipes?

You aren’t asking about turnips because of that giant swede in your picture are you? Or is the turnip question unrelated? For swede I like this cheap and cheerful version of a green mango salad http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/515754
Thanks Liz.
I honestly thought it was a turnip. However they are quite similar!
I’ll be giving that salad a go at some stage as I will now be getting a swede/turnip once per week!
In scotland the swede is called a turnip and is great in a barley stew or in haggis neeps and tatties – I loved it with veg haggis in pasties but turnips are great in any pasties – or just thrown in with lots of root vegies to roast in the oven and if you want to pep up the roast veg coat them with almond butter and oil and salt (a la diet dessert and dogs)
when I was growing up we always had them mashed with potatoes and loads of butter- loved it
What a lot of produce for only £6. Such a bargain. Sadly there isn’t one near us. I’m really missing the veg box we used to get in London and must find a local scheme now that we have moved. I love swede and turnips mashed with potatoes and served alongside sausages or other hearty dishes. Also great diced and added to casseroles or eaten with haggis and tatties!
