Tasting Notes: Ikea / Finax Lingonbröd Mix

These tasting notes are mainly as an aide memoir for me, as I can never remember which brands that I like, or perhaps more importantly do not like.   Over time I am hoping to build up a substantial database on my ingredients page.

Ikea Lingonberry Bread Loaf

I get quite excited about my trips to Ikea, not because of the flat pack furniture that will give me an identikit European decor, but because I like the food.   As soon as I get through the door I go straight to the canteen for a piece of the amazingly yummy and moresome diam bar cake – washed down with Ikea coffee, brewed in a vat and surprisingly good, although slightly too weak for my tastes.

Last time I went I even had a plate of Swedish meatballs which, I am slightly ashamed to say, I rather liked.    I had puzzled over the concept of  Swedish Meatballs for years – what is  it that makes meatballs Swedish?  When home I  googled “Swedish Meatballs” and was slightly disappointed to learn that in fact that it was not that all meatballs were Swedish, but some are Swedish style meatballs, and the style referred to the gravy and sauce served with them.    I had known that it was unlikely that the Swedes had a monopoly on all meatballs, but was slightly disappointed by the clarification.

Fortified, I battled my way through Ikealand.    I am amazed by some of their storage solutions and how a really tiny space, if kitted out properly, can be very livable in, but I wonder how the Ikea designers would deal with me and my huge quantities of cookbooks, kitchen stuff, fabric and yarn, coupled with my tendency not to want to put things away.      After the long winding trek through the displays, the market place, then the queues for the tills is the Swedish food market, which to my mind is the second good part of the whole ghastly experience and almost worth the trip to Ikea.

Ikea Lingonberry Bread

I bought the Lingonberry bread mix (made by Finax) on a whim, I think it was £1.59 or thereabouts for 1kg, which makes 2 x 750g loaves.     The flour is a wheat and rye mix, with added wholegrains and dried lingonberries and comes with sachets of yeast.    It produces a delicious bread, firm, but not too solid and dark as some rye breads can be.     The lingonberries are delightfully tart with a little sweetness.

Excellent bread – delicious hot from the oven, as well as toasted from frozen.

I cannot read these instructions for the bread so can you help me out? I have the mix from Ikea but not the English instructions.
thanks for your help in advance.

me too. I cannot read. Can you help please? Thanks!

  • I had a bag of this given to me, and the instructions are in English on the label and many other languages too if you take the time to look!
I was disappointed with this as I thought it was very bland, but tastes differ of course. But it certainly works in that you will get a quick and easy loaf from it and it is easy to use. Have you ever tried the other one they do, the tetrapak shake and mix in the box, now that’s some scary bread…. :)

I like your blog very much by the way!

Hi there. I am trying to find the bread mix (not keen on the tetrapak mix), my store has not had any in for months and I’m not having much luck with other stores. Any suggestions?

    Thanks C.

For all those still wondering about where to find the Lingonbrod’s translation on the package, it is on the back of the bag.

Here in Canada (and things may differ in other countries), at the end of the nutrition facts sticker replacing the original instruction, they tell you to turn the page.

And, yep, there it is in both English and French…
No, it’s not an easy find but once you do, it all seemed so obvious!

    So happy kneading!

mix flour with 50 ml of water with the two yeast sachets. add 600 ml of water at 40 degrees C or 105 F
work the dough for 10 min. Leave the dough to rise under a cloth for about 30 min. Knead the dough and shape into 2 loaves. Place on a baking sheet leave for about 30 min. brush with water and make a few cuts in it. Bake in the bottom of the oven for about 400 f for about 35 to 40 min.

    This is off the package.
