The Egg Concealed
As well as the quests of many London foodbloggers to find the best burger in London, there has been an increasing number of words written about the best Scotch Egg to be found in the Capital. Happily for me there are a number of good examples, all within walking distance of my flat.
The Harwood Arms – Delicious with a runny yolk, crispy coating and served with crunchy salt crystals. The egg was wonderful, but you would expect it to be so as they have a Michelin star. I would return for a pint and another egg, but not for a full meal
Closer to home is the Pear Tree with mixed reviews for dining. Some loved it, I was not so keen, but they are so close to me I want to give them another try. They served an excellent black pudding Scotch egg, delicious, crumbly meat and a soft egg (slightly underdone). Again I would return for an egg and a pint.

The Egg Revealed
A stone’s throw from The Pear Tree is the Idle Hour (also in Barnes and Putney and with a woefully out of date website). I was underwhelmed by their food, but surely they have got in on the Scotch egg act?
Even closer is the Curtain’s Up with it’s great theatre and my refuge when I lock myself out of the flat. I spied a large jar of Scotch eggs on the bar, but have not had one yet.
But my egg to go of choice is from my local butcher, the award winning HG Walter, a mere 50 yards from Barons Court tube, and a 5 minute walk from my home.

The Egg Exposed
A free range egg, encased in tender moist perfectly cooked pork (organic Gloucester Old Spot to be precise), lightly spiced and containg a few fine shreds of onion & spring onion, all wrapped in crispy bread crumbs. Absolutely delicious and made daily on site at HG Walter, a bargain for only £1.90. Do go and see them and buy one very soon. All their meat is fantastic quality and the staff are a delight.

It looks lovely, it does.
BUT, I have to say, for me the best scotch eggs are definitely eaten hot from the frying, with the yolk still soft, the whole thing still meaty and the crumb still crunchy and glistening.
I agree Kavey, but it is the best so far “to go”.
Very very good with a bowl of soup for lunch. I may have another tomorrow.
Oh they look amazing!
I do love a scotch egg – my favourites are made by my mum; I like them warm but not hot. Plus, if she has sausage meat left over she makes little sausage balls and coats and fries them – heaven!
