Review: Zabu Coffee – Fine Coffee Beans by Post

We received some coffee from Zabu, the recently launched monthly coffee bean delivery service. This service will send customers 2 packets of 227 grams of coffee (the delights of a metric 8 ounces!), which has been roasted to order, per month; one packet of house blend, and a packet of the coffee of the month (complete with tasting notes). The standard delivery is of beans but deliveries can be ground coffee if requested.

We tried four coffees: the house blend, Tanzania AA, Colombian Medellin Excelso and Sumatra Blue Lingtong. The first thing that we noticed is that for all four, the benefits of the vacuum packed freshly roasted beans, which we then grind fresh for each cafetière were very clear, with all four coffees exhibiting a wonderful clarity of taste.

I thought that all four coffees were excellent. Three of the coffees – the house blend, Tanzania and Colombian were all more milder roasts, and paler in colour. In particular we thought that the House Blend was a a great introduction to Zabu’s; it’s a Rainforest Alliance certified blend of arabica beans from Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica. It’s not especially rich, but it is well rounded and very drinkable.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Sumatra Blue Lingtong was a much darker roast, and a much richer and fuller, rounded flavour, but without any bitterness that the darker roast might have hinted.

For those who want drink a wider range of coffee than is available as most supermarkets, but don’t’ have access to specialist coffee merchants, the Zabu services is well worth a look. For £12.97, the service is a little more expensive than bog standard packets from the supermarket, but the price is offset to a degree by the fact that you receive a coffee grinder with your first order, and we like the variety of coffees received.  Great for a present or a treat for yourself.

Zabu Coffee monthly subscriptions from £12.97.
