Weather Cupcakes Or How Sugar Mice Can Go Out In The Rain

Sugar mice ready for the rain

“There was once a little sugar mouse who went out in the rain, and of course he dissolved and the only thing which was left was a short piece of string that had been his tail.”

I am surprised that this childhood story by Enid Blyton did not traumatise me, but it firmly embedded itself in my memory and resurfaced last week when I went to the Hope and Greenwood Christmas show and was given a box of sugar mice.

I reflected that the poor old sugar mouse and his friends would not last long this summer, the streets would be littered with little pieces of string… It was such a sad image I could barely think about it.  Then inspiration struck – give the little sugar mice umbrellas – then they could go on outings and picnics anywhere they wanted.

They tested their new umbrellas at home and then gingerly ventured out, firstly to the end of the street and then further afield to a picnic in the countryside.   They stayed warm and dry and lived happily ever after.

Sugar mouse in the rainI am sending this Weather Cupcakes to Alphabakes where this month the letter is W.  The brief is to be “Be as imaginative or as traditional as you like…. ”

  1. Aw, sugar mice, I have fond memories of visits to my grandmother who would always have a paper bag with sugar mice waiting for me in her hallway sideboard. I love your tale of the mice, I missed out on this particular Enid Blyton story. Hope your cakes do well and stay out of the way of any sugar cats!

  2. Those are so cute! Thanks for sending them in to Alphabakes!

  3. Pete adores sugar mice. I often get him one or two for Christmas or now and again randomly when I see them. Love this whimsical post, Helen!

    • I love them. Such fun. The thought of all those bits of string really does bring a lump to my throat!

  4. Those are so cute!! :) And definitely appropriate for the weather we’ve been having this summer, unfortunately…

  5. Lovely post Helen and how nostalgic. I didn’t know sugar mice were alive and well, never mind being nicely sheltered by umbrellas.

  6. My mum is obsessed with sugar mice. She tried to get me to eat one once.

  7. I love these! Sugar mice are M’s favourite, I’d not thought of putting them on cupcakes before. And such cute umbrellas, an epic solution to lonely peices of string.

  8. Sugar mice on cupcakes?? This is a brilliant idea for a funny birthday party. Unfortunately, you really need the umbrella these days.

I loved these as a child – I didnt know you could still get them! XOXO

  10. I remember these beautiful mice fondly. I miss them and often wonder where they are sold now. I did a little bit of research into old fashioned sweet shops for my daughter and there are a few good ones left still. She would love to hear this Enid Blyton story too. I love this post! x

  11. Oh the Mice are so cute, I must look out for them! There is a great ‘old fashioned’ sweet shop in Kingston and I love Hope and Greenwood, I can hear the mice squeaking ‘Buy Me’! buy Me!’ They are on my Autumn ‘to buy’ list!
Like Laura, I have a daughter who will adore rather mice and probably enjoy the story. Thank you.

  12. Haha! I missed this one. Brilliant!

  13. Cute post! I remember those sugar mice fondly. No umbrellas needed for them today, gonna be a hot one (don’t go putting them away though, bound to end up with a thunderstorm soon enough!)
