Beautiful blood orange curd muffins [...] Pretty salmon pink blood orange curd, perfect for breakfast [...] I think that sloe gin is winter’s answer to summer’s elderflower cordial. A warming winter liqueur, a pretty deep pink purple in colour, with a heavenly fruity, berry plumy taste. I love going to the market, buying a tray of something in season and then taking it home to preserve. I picked the elderflowers on Midsummer’s eve and bottled them on Midsummer’s day. Today is Midsummer’s day and for those of us in the Northern hemisphere the longest day of the year, [...] [...] One of my abiding childhood memories is of my mother making jellies, specifically the jelly bag hanging from on an upturned stool on the kitchen worktop with the cooked fruit straining, running and then dripping through. I can well remember watching the drips getting slower and slower and eventually stopping as the mixture strained, and [...] [...] I am a huge fan of homemade jams, jellies and chutneys and I love my weekend afternoons pottering in my kitchen stirring a huge vat of preserve, warming jars, bottling, sealing and making pretty labels. I find the rituals of preserving calming and satisfying, therapeutic and meditative, after a tough week at work I decide [...] [...] After my trip to the market and excess of peppers the other day I made up this chutney recipe, the mix of red ingredients makes a vibrant coloured chutney, packed with flavour, roasting the peppers brings their flavour out and adds even more depth of colour.
