Goodbye Frugal Food Friday – Hello Credit Crunch Munch

New Year.  New Start!

I have retired Frugal Food Fridays – too much alliteration and the Friday was too misleading and I have replaced with Credit Crunch Munch which I will be running with the lovely Camilla from Fab Food 4 All.

Although there is a new name and a new logo (designed by Camilla’s husband) the idea behind the event remains the same, we want to know how you enjoy great food, but still spend less or save some money.  Think about…

  • Dishes using cheaper ingredients – cheap cuts of meat or vegetarian
  • Meals using leftovers
  • Meals using up the ends of packets
  • Substitutions of cheaper ingredients
  • Packed lunches
  • Meals that use less energy to cook
  • Pressure cooking
  • Slow cooking
  • Faster cooking – less oven time for example
  • Batch cooking for the freezer
  • Sustainable foods
  • Food you have grown yourself
  • Meals from reduced food in the supermarket

This month (and next) I am concentrating on substitutions, as I am going to attempt to limit my food shopping to fruit, vegetables and milk, and use up all the half packets of beans, grains, flours etc etc.  I am sure I will end up buying some sugar and flour but it will be interesting to see how long I can last eating from the cupboards and freezer.

  1. What a great idea! I’m doing the same thing this month, we’ve budgeted £200 for fresh fruit, veg and milk and I’m going to concentrate on emptying the cupboards and deep freeze. It will be an interesting challenge and I’m sure I’ll come up with a recipe or two to share. :)

  2. Great idea! Our old freezer irretrievably broke down in November so we lost the food inside. Since I’ve had the new one, I’ve been on a real mission to make sure that I’m only buying what I need each week, and using my fridge and freezer storage more wisely. Previously I would have thought nothing about stocking up the freezer with things off the shelf in the supermarket (including impulse buys of ready meals and meat / fish etc for storage), but I’ve found it easier, and more tasty, to just try meal planning with some canny shopping and buy a little extra for a recipe, and then freeze leftovers. It means there is less cash locked up in my freezer, and my turnover of food is quicker. I’m really looking forward to seeing what people come up with for this. :)
