Little yummy snippets …
When it comes to coffee we have tried it – capsule espresso machine, regular espresso machine, stove top espresso machine & cafetière and we have returned to the old fashioned pour over with cone and filter paper. These insulated double walled glass latte mugs from Judge Cookware are perfect for pour over as you can see how full they are. Latte mugs £13.50 a pair, other sizes and tumblers also available. We are huge fans of cleaning products from method, and really like the scent of the new pink grapefruit range. I am highly sensitive to smell and generally dislike any other smelly products. We also appreciate that most of the products can be refilled and the air freshner does not use propellents. Perfect for a green spring clean. Twitter @methoduk.
Cheese, cheese glorious cheese! We love cheese and usually focus on British and French classics. A tasting pack of The Best Three Cheese from the Gouda Cheese Shop, expanded our Dutch cheese horizons and were a million miles away from supermarket gouda. Unpasteurized Farmhouse Matured was Smooth, creamy with noted of caramel. The matured gouda was soft but nuttier and the star was the Alter Peter richer, nuttier, sweet & caramelly. Delicious. 3 x 500g pieces for EUR23.50 (+ EUR10.95 P&P). Very good quality and would make a good present. Twitter @goudsekaasshop
Cottage Delight have been making preserves since 1974. What I did not realise was their range now includes stocks, pates & beers and they have over 700 lines. We tired some new items for summer, a zingy green chilli and lemon sauce – ideal for dipping or marinading. Bloody Mary salsa – a dip version of the classic drink and a smokey beetroot dressing to add colour and zing to summer salads. Twitter @cottagedelight
Coffee is essential to our morning routines and for the sake of a harmonious relationship Ed’s one-time experiment of making me a decaff first thing to see if I really did need the caffeine (I certainly did) never needs to be repeated. The folks at Discount Coffee stock a wide range of coffee and brewing accessories. We tried several packets from Chiswell’s; Monsoon Malabar dark roasted, smooth and mellow, with nutty, spicy flavours. Malawi AAA Mzuzu – light roast; clear, fruity flavours with a hint of acid and Guatemalan Finca Culpan which was sweet, rounded, fruity & floral with a hint of acid. Around £5 a 250g bag. One of my favourite supermarket cheeses is the Castello creamy blue, and once opened we can easily consume a packet in a single sitting. I spent a very enjoyable evening smorging with Castello cheese and Danish chef Trine Hahnemann, trying out different combinations of bread and crispbreads with different Castello cheeses and other toppings. Top of my smorg charts was the Danish blue with lamb, cucumber, basil and lemon – delicious and perfect for using up Easter leftovers, and Trine’s choux buns filled with the pineapple halo were a revelation. If you are feeding a crowd this Easter set up a smorging buffet with plenty of cheese, other ingredients with a range of textures and flavours and see what you come up with. Twitter @castelloUK
Can you believe that Pizza Express is 50 years old this year? They are our to go chain as the pizzas are always both reliable & affordable and we always enjoy them. I went along to their newest flag ship restaurant at Leicester Square and sampled the new spring / summer menu and had a go at making pizzas (far harder than it looks). I loved the new noci – smokey roasted cashews, almonds and chickpeas, my favourite American Hot pizza has been updated to the American Hottest (pictured), there are lots of salads and lighter dishes added to the menu. Puddings have been freshened up and there is a range of lighter desserts too. To encourage responsible drinking all wine is also available in a 125ml glass. Well worth a visit this summer. Many thanks to all the brands featured for samples and invitations. All photos my own apart from Chiswell Coffee, Castello and Pizza Express.
