Everything you need for a sumptuous Christmas feast for four, six, eight or 10 delivered to your door. Enjoy a traditional turkey without any shopping hassle.Â
The final shop before Christmas is next month – not scary close, but definitely on the horizon. I’m not worrying, but that last shop when the supermarkets are jam packed as everybody stocks up the endless list of ingredients needed for Christmas dinner, has to rate as one of my least favourite experiences of the year. High on stress and low on enjoyment. So why not just get everything you need – down to the spices – delivered in one big recipe box?
Hello Fresh – who deliver ready to cook meal boxes, with fresh pre-portioned ingredients and recipe cards – can remove any Christmas dinner stress with their Christmas Feast Boxes: like their usual meal boxes, all ingredients are included as well as an extensive recipe card, giving full instructions with hints and tips of how to cook your traditional Christmas dinner.
As you would expect ingredients are all premium quality, delicious turkey from Gressingham, top quality British pancetta and vegetables.  All are packed well in a strudy cardboard box with the perishable ingredients wrapped in environmentally friendly wool insulation. A word of warning don’t have the box delivered to work and expect to be able to carry it home on public transport – it is big heavy and unwieldy due to the amount of food.
It’s a generous meal: turkey, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips, braised red cabbage, and Brussels sprouts and pancetta in a garlic cream sauce. Some basic preparation takes place the night before; peeling and slicing vegetables and so on.
For the box for four people that we tried, the turkey is in the form of a crown, so while there aren’t any drumsticks or dark meat; quantities are kept within reasonable limits. A crown is provided for the six person box too, while the meals for eight or ten include a whole bird. Yes, you will have some leftovers, but not so much that you’re still eating turkey on Valentine’s day. A couple of day’s worth, which in my eyes is about perfect. The four person box would have easily fed 5, or not 6.
As well as all the ingredients you need (aside from salt and pepper), you get a detailed recipe booklet giving details on how to cook each part of the meal. There is a significant amount of work that can be done on the day before – normally Christmas eve, of course, but this box would also work if you are having a celebratory meal with, say, flatmates before heading home to family for Christmas itself
The instructions are well laid out and easy to follow, of course the prep takes the majority of the time and much of this is done the day before so you can get on with your Christmas, but there is still a far amount of work to be done on the day itself.  Ed cooked the meal and reckoned that for 4 it would be 2 hours prep time the day before and an hour hands on on the day, a few of the jobs you could do the day before the day before such as making the gravy and red cabbage. Of course half the fun is cooking together and with a helper you will whizz through the prep time.
One of the great things about meal boxes like Hello Fresh is that you get to learn new ideas and techniques that you might not have thought about. For instance, with this Christmas dinner, rather than making the gravy in the roasting pan whilst the bird rests, it’s made from roasted vegetables and chicken drumsticks. It’s not something that we’ve done before, but the end result of is a deliciously rich and meaty gravy.
When you receive your box, it’s a good plan to thoroughly read the instructions before you start to cook so that you get an idea about what’s involved, and tick off the ingredients so that you can see what’s been combined – for example, in our box the flour used in both the gravy and for the potatoes came in a single sachet.
The one thing we would say is that the box doesn’t include cranberry sauce or ingredients for bread sauce. So if Christmas dinner isn’t Christmas dinner without either or both of these, then you do need to provide them separately.  We’d also like a timeline that tells you what to do when – so 3 and a half hours before serving switch the oven on, 3 hours before pop the turkey in etc.
The Hello Fresh Traditional Christmas Feast Box is a perfect way for you to enjoy a home cooked Christmas dinner, and is ideal if you have not tackled a Christmas meal before, or are going away and want to make, at lest the main part of the catering easier.
Boxes are also available for six, eight and ten people. They cost £69.99/£89.99/£109.99 and £129.99 respectively, so £17.50 – £13 a head depending on the numbers you are catering for. Should you want, you can add a dessert of chocolate orange pots with a biscuit base and caramelised nuts. I think that with the quality of the ingredients, the amount of food and the hand holding that the instructions give it is really quite good value. With another few pounds there are at least 2 more meals from leftovers.
