Savoury, crispy and enticingly more-ish Spam fries will really surprise you. Indulge in these guilty secret treats, plus they are gluten free!
SPAM Fries
Who doesn’t love indulging in a guilty pleasure every now and then? Shopping, chocolate, shoes: what’s yours? I love covering jalapeno peppers in cheese and popping it under the grill for a stringy, cheesy, finger-licking treat, with a real heat bite. E’s guilty pleasure is far simpler: cheap (but not too cheap) cheddar cheese on a digestive biscuit, combining fat and sugar in a moreish mouthful.
I will fully admit that neiher of us really like uncooked, straight from the tin SPAM. However, cooking Spam changes things completely, and this recipe is a perfect way of trying it out. Spam fries are another I-shouldn’t-but-can’t-resist treat. Savoury, salty, caramelized and crispy on the outside, they’re not what you might expect from a dish made from Spam. There’s no way that they could be considered to be high class dining, but there are times when we all want to get down and eat something that has us licking our fingers.
Spam itself dates from 1937, and really entered the consciousness during the war. According to where you look, the name is either a contraction of spiced ham, or a word the true meaning of which is only known by company executives. It’s place in the popular consciousness was made secure by the Monty Python Spam sketch, complete with singing Vikings.
It’s great store-ability is one of the reasons it became so popular across a pre-fridge world, particularly islands in the Pacific. But it still holds true today: there are many advantages to having a tin or two of Spam sitting in the cupboard. Without any fears about it going off, it can sit there until you get the urge to pop open a can and switch on the oven.
This is about as simple as a recipe can be: slice up the Spam into sticks, and bake in the oven at for about 12 minutes for your spam fries. Serve with a dollop of tomato ketchup, and enjoy.
