This gin and melon slushie cocktail is perfect and refreshing for the hottest days of summer. Whizz in the blender and freeze!
Gin and Melon Slushie
According to the song, the Sultan in downtown Persia had one request for his coffee;
All I want is a proper cup of coffee
Made in a proper copper coffee pot.
I know how he feels with regard to the coffee, although I will skip the copper coffee pot and go for the simplicity of a pour over. Similarly sometimes all I want is a proper cocktail, served in a proper cocktail glass.
My martini glasses are massive – each holds about 200ml of gin and it would be foolish to fill them right to the brim – a cocktail needs to be enjoyed elegantly, if I filled one of them with gin I would not be able to stand once I got a third of the way down.
This gin and melon slushie is icy cold and perfect for the hot humid days of a city summer. You do need a decent blender, I have been testing the Optimum 9400, sold by Froothie, at £329 it is an investment, but an elite blender is now an essential piece of kitchen kit for me and I use it several times a day and performance wise the Optimum stands up to its more expensive competitors (read my initial thoughts here).
You do need to think in advance for this one – prepare and peel the melon a good few hours before then freeze and chill the gin.
Recipe: Gin and Melon Slushie
Ingredients
- ½ Galia melon – use a Honeydew for a sweeter drink
- 100 ml of gin
- Squeeze of lemon
To Serve
- 2 slices of lemon
- 2 sprigs of mint
Instructions
- Peel, deseed and chop the melon into bite sized pieces. Spread out on to a baking mat and freeze. Once frozen pack into a plastic box or bag. (Or if you do not have a high powered blender blitz the melon and gin and freeze)
- Blend the melon, gin and lemon juice until smooth. Pour into glasses and garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint.
- If you do not have a high powered blender then blend unfrozen melon with the gin, pour into a jar and freeze. Remove from the freezer and give it a bash with a fork before serving.
- Serve immediately and enjoy elegantly.

I would say, the way I go at it, this is more of a serves one type of recipe. But whatever: I am going to try it!
Props for using a nice glass. THESE THINGS MATTER!
Helen
I love my martini glasses Peter – serving something nicely makes such a difference.
Kavey
I’m not a fan of gin but I do love frozen cocktails in the summer… I like mine sweet, though! :-)
Helen
I think a sweeter melon and a shot of elderflower cordial would work well Kavey.
Jeanne @ Cooksister
Oh I do like the thought of a gin slushie!! LIke being a kid again… but with alcohol ;)

The best of both worlds Jeanne!
Lynn
Oh! When I was a kid I sang ‘a proper cup o’ coffee pot!’ I had no idea. And I even have a copper coffee pot.
I think I’d rather have your cocktail, that looks gorgeous.
Helen
It is a bit of a tongue twister, I am sure I sang it too!

Michelle @ Greedy Gourmet
Nah, I don’t agree that cocktails should look elegant. You should use your big glasses properly by overflowing them with booze to reflect therapeutically to what happened on the day and knock you out so that you don’t worry about tomorrow! Lush cocktail by the way.
Helen
That is one way of looking at it Michelle. If I drank one of those glasses full of gin I simply would not care how my day had been.
Sally - My Custard Pie
I’m not very keen on icy cold things….but could be tempted by this… as it has my favourite spirit in it. The aroma of the melon and the gin must divine.
Helen
It was very delicate, and perfect for the weather we are having.
Jen @ Blue Kitchen Bakes
I could do with of these today, it’s been a long hot day, perfect for icy gin I think.
Helen
Absolutely use icy gin. We have a bottle in the freezer!
