I’ve always been rather fond of a spicy tomato juice, but, as I am not a vodka drinker have ever been a fan of the Bloody Mary.
On a recent visit to the Maille Mustard boutique in central London I discovered, and was wowed by their tomato vinegar, a delicious, richly coloured and flavoured mix of tomato purée and vinegar. Perfect for a modern non-alcoholic twist on the traditional Bloody Mary.
We’ll be serving this for a weekend brunch, or for a hangover soother, the vinegar mimics the alcohol nicely, giving the kick, but also leaving you with a clear head.

Where is the Maille Mustard Boutique! I really love the Maille Dijon with Honey! I do however love a good Bloody Mary!
Helen
The boutique is on Piccadilly Heidi. I adore their honey Dijon, so so good and it goes in almost everything.

What a super idea, perfect for driving too!
Helen
it certainly is Jude! I am a huge supporter of fantastic mocktails.

Eek I don’t tomato juice or Bloody Mary’s but my mum loves a good Bloody Mary so I’ll tell her about this, A nice stick of celery. Pretty pic :-)
Helen
I love tomato juice. It was the first grown up drink I enjoyed as a child

No virgin cocktails in our house, always a good dash of Polish vodka! X
Helen
I would expect nothing less Ren!
Hurnae
It looks great! I too am partial to spicy tomato and this recipe is fantastic x
Helen
Thank you. I am afraid I did rather gulp mine down.
Agata Pokutycka
I like the idea of it.
Where do you buy a celery salt please?
Helen
Agata, Any supermarket with a reasonable selection of spices should have it. Mine was from Waitrose.

Nice photo! Bloody Marys have never appealed to me before but having tasted that tomato vinegar I’m very tempted!
Helen
A bloody or virgin Mary was my first thought when I tasted that vinegar.
Janie
I’m with Ren on this one, vodka all the way :)

Helen
I’ll take one for the team and try it with vodka then!

What an unusual way to use mustard and vinegar! Must confess I have never had a Bloody Mary
Helen
I have them very very rarely. Last time was after an overnight cross channel race and as we moored up one of the crew produced 2 litre bottle of ready mixed Bloody Mary, that was amazingly good, and also really rather strong.
Jeanne @ Cooksister
Oooh – I have never seen their tomato vinegar! Love the colour, and I know Nick will *love* the flavour as tomatoes and vinegar are possibly his two favourite edible things ever. Lovely shot!
Helen
It was delicious. They also do an equally vibrant mango vinegar.
Sylvia
This is something for me! I love the taste of tomato juice :) I tried once Virign Mary with marmite – delicious!
Helen
I shall have to try that with the remainder of the tomato juice!

Tomato vinegar has got to be good! Fabulous cocktail but I’m reckoning a wee splash of vodka would be fab too :) Maille Dijon rocks!
Helen
the vinegar is amazing, seriously lovely product.
Jacqueline Meldrum
I am slightly tempted to try this. I has always been something I shunned, but now I am looking at it and thinking maybe.
Helen
The vinegar is amazing Jac! Go for it!

I love the idea of the vinegar – great stuff. My fave maille product is the honey mustard which I can eat by the teaspoonful!
Helen
I adore that honey mustard. Fortunately another jar turned up along with the vinegar.
Tina @ The Spicy Pear
Great recipe. I shall have to keep an eye out for the tomato vinegar. I’m a big fan of vodka, but oddly don’t like it in bloody mary’s. I prefer the non alcoholic version, goes perfectly with a full english breakfast the next day, following a messy night.
Helen
The vinegar is amazing! Very highly recommended.
Janice Pattie (@FarmersgirlCook)
I have the opposite problem Helen, I like the vodka but cannot abide the texture of tomato juice! Still this does look very sophisticated and, if you like tomato juice, would be an ideal non-alcoholic drink at a party or for a designated driver.
Helen
I think that most of my food likes and dislikes could stem as much from texture as from taste.
Vanesther - Bangers & Mash
I do rather love a Bloody Mary and this virgin version looks perfect for those nights when I’m the designated driver. Like the sound of Maille’s tomato vinegar too – will keep an eye out for that…
