Often you do not notice that there is a gap in the market until someone fills it. We have been sent the majority of monthly food boxes to review – French deli, healthy snacks, artisan products and speciality food and recipes from a range of different countries to name a few. New to the market is fine chocolate bars, supplied by Cocoa Runners.
Over the last few years I have become more and more enamoured with fine bar chocolate, single origin, bean to bar etc etc. Good chocolate is complex with a myriad of tastes and flavour profiles. I am enjoying learning more, and as I taste more am discovering my preferences and developing my palate (as well as converting my friends).
Unless you stock up at a speciality show or tradefair a selection of fine bar chocolate is not always the easiest to come by, much is manufactured abroad and is expensive to order. Step in Cocoa Runners founded by a team of UK based chocolate experts who have tasted their way through 500 bars and build a core “library” of around 100.
Each month you can receive a specially selected box of 4 or 5 bars, complete with tasting cards which will help you to savour, appreciate and enjoy the chocolate even more, as well as educating your palate further. Chocolate really can taste of red fruit, banana, liquorice, and citrus and these tasting notes really teach you how to pick out the nuances. Tasting is made simpler with a system of tasting icons which indicate type, flavour, texture and flavour notes enabling you to identify similar bars which subscribers to the monthly box can buy from the library (which I am delighted to see contains my favourite Rózsavölgyi Csokoládé Porcelana)
My box contained bars by Marou – from Vietnam (intensely flavoured with notes of cinnamon and liquorice), Pacari Raw (unripe banana and liquorice) , Original Beans (tropical fruits, honey and orange) and Menakao Milk – intense (Ed did not realise it was milk chocolate with red fruit and citrus). Bars change every month, so I feel a detailed review of each is not needed, sufficient to say all were excellent.
Packaging is designed to fit through a standard letter box, and I loved the stylish design of the boxes and the overall branding.
Introductory subscriptions start at £16.95 a month (or £44.95 for 3 months) and include 4 or 5 bars a month and p&p. You can choose from mixed or dark. I nibble my fine chocolate one square at a time so a bar goes a long way. I think that it is excellent value and am seriously considering subscribing both for myself and as a present for a chocolate loving friend.
Highly recommened you enjoy chocolate and would like to know more about it.
Many thanks to Cocoa Runners for my sample box.
