We’ve been given a Krups Citiz Nespresso coffee machine to test. This machine was sent to us by Idealo, the price comparison website, which has a full range of coffee pod machines available. For those who haven’t seen George Clooney or Kevin Spacey advertising Nespresso, they are a Nestle’s entry in the coffee pod market. Pods enable you to brew espresso or longer coffee drinks from ground coffee, but avoid a lot of the mess associated with loose coffee, and ensure your coffee is in peak condition.
The Citiz machine is particularly easy to use: make sure the water reservoir is full, switch on the machine, open the top lever to drop in the coffee capsule, close and when the buttons have stopped flashing to show that the machine is ready, press the relevant one for an espresso or larger coffee.
The great advantages of the Nespresso system is that it very straightforward, very clean and very easy. You get a guaranteed quality of coffee, without having to learn the idiosyncrasies of a particular ground coffee espresso machine. Also, with the coffee being hermetically sealed inside the pods, it’s kept fresh. There are sixteen different types of coffee capsule available, giving a wide range of different blends; surely enough to satisfy most people!
Next to the coffee machine, on the same base plate, is a milk warmer/frother. The frothing is by a small whisk placed inside the bowl which holds the milk – with the whisk being spun by magnetic action. The combination of the coffee machine and the milk frother mean that whipping up a cappuccino is simplicity itself. The weakness of the frother is that as it’s an all in one device, it can’t go into the washing up machine to be cleaned.
The downside of coffee pods is that they are more expensive than using loose coffee – you are paying for the convenience. And buying the pods is not straightforward, as they’re not widely stocked. The easiest source is probably buying them online. Also, there is a lot of waste for a cup of coffee, although Nespresso do offer a pod recycling service from their stores.
The Citiz is perfect for small offices, or people who want easy access to quality coffee.
Many thanks to Idealo for my machine. Their site tells me that you can currently buy the same one for anywhere between £151.99 and £224.89! An astonishing range of prices and a reminder that price checking really can save you a lot of money.
