Gorgeous, innovative, top quality sushi to enjoy at home.
Here at Fuss Free HQ we really rather enjoy our sushi, are really rather picky about about it and feel that any old sushi just will not do. Until very recently sushi was a rare treat enjoyed when one of us had to go in the direction of Piccadilly Square and could swing by the Japan Centre and pick some up. When I was invited to receive a delivery of the limited edition”London box” from French company Sushi Shop – who are new to London – my response was an eager “yes please” and I was blown away by the quantity and innovative style of sushi that arrived.
I was so impressed that when Sushi Shop asked me to Paris for the day to eat more of their excellent sushi and visit some of their shops and their HQ I immediately agreed – I know Paris for sushi does seem slightly odd, but the Sushi Shop sushi really is that good.
The stunning Sushi Shop London Box, was designed by Chris Labrooy, and is packed with 38 pieces of sushi for £45:-
- 2 veggie Californian hand rolls
- 6 tuna and truffle California rolls
- 6 London spring rolls
- 6 salmon rolls
- 6 cooked tuna and apple
- 6 salmon and avocado California rolls
- 4 salmon sushi
- 2 teriyaki salmon sushi
The quality is top notch – sticky but not heavy rice, fish that is perfectly cut, fillings are balanced and generous. The sushi is certainly not traditional, the salmon rolls are filled with cream cheese (it works perfectly), the tuna and truffle spring rolls are delicately truffled, the only complaint about the teriyaki salmon sushi is that there needs to be more if it.
Sushi shop was founded in 1998 by Gregory Marciano. At the time there was some sushi available in Paris, but no delivery and certainly nothing innovative. Sushi Shop’s original sushi chef is still with the business and now works training their new chefs.
The company concentrates on beautifully presented, creative, innovative sushi, the shops are decorated in dark colours and natural woods, all sushi is freshly made in each shop. Each year there is a new collection created in collaboration with a top chef, as well as a new beautifully designed box – previous boxes have been designed by Kate Moss and Lenny Kravitz , the current London box is designed by Chris Labrooy. The menus are glossy featuring bright sushi on dark pages – a far cry from most takeaway of delivery menus.
Evening trade is core to the business with 70% of the turnover being dinner time sales, much of this being delivered (within a two mile radius of the shop – sadly we are just outside the catchment area). A two person box (is on the generous side) and costs from £31.50 for a standard box – to £63 for the Gourmet Black Box filled with stunningly beautiful sushi, (which I am rather hankering after for my birthday dinner), smaller one person lunch boxes are in the region of £8 – 12. Order, for delivery, or a 15min pick up window on line.
