“Quality ingredients simply cooked”
The Italian lesson of using excellent ingredients cooked simply that I learnt on my trip to Italy last year with Cirio is one that has massively influenced my cooking and purchasing habits. The same lesson can be modified to encompass much of one’s life, less is more and concentrate on the quality. A square of good chocolate is as satisfying as a bar of cheap, probably costs the same and is kinder to your waistline.
An important part of any holiday is eating and buying the local food, I love to meander in markets, browse in specialty food shops and amble around the supermarket. Sadly every increasingly airport security and restrictions on hand luggage make it harder to bring food home, and I am always nervous about checking bottles in, however well cushioned they are. I remember an anxious few moments a few years ago as my carry on bag was x-rayed in Hamburg – would the luxurious (and expensive) pistachio marzipan inside make it though or did it count as a paste and was liable for confiscation? Happily it did.
Italian online food store Ufuud caters for those who love to buy top quality ingredients and has a mouthwatering range of Italian treats, encompassing all sorts of rice and pasta, antipasti, oils, vinegars and cakes. Fresh food such as cheese and hams are offered too. The website is priced in Sterling, is easy to search and gives an impressive amount of information about each product, its provenance and serving suggestions. It is all top quality and the website is altogether too tempting.
I spent an enjoyable half hour browsing and deliberating, putting items in and out of my basket, before deciding on a luxury selection including 7 years aged risotto rice (£10.70 for 500g), marinaded anchovies (£11 for 250g), semi dried tomatoes in extra virgin olive oil (£11.90 for 250g), some pasta, more rice and and incredibly indulgent 5 gold medal winning balsamic vinegar at a massive £42 for 250ml as I’d never had really indulgent balsamic vinegar – for the record it is delicious – thick, rich, sweet with a hint of apple – and well worth buying once.
I ordered late afternoon on a Wednesday and impressively my parcel sent from Milan arrived on Friday morning. Everything was well wrapped in bubble wrap and packed into a polystyrene box which along with gel packs is designed to keep fresh foods cool for up to 96 hours. The outer packaging was a cardboard box, with a reassuring security seal. I quite understand the need for the polystyrene for sending chilled items, but would have preferred a more environmentally friendly option for my ambient order. (Perishable goods are only dispatched Monday to Wednesday to ensure they arrive, via Ufuud’s guaranteed cold chain, before the weekend break)
Ordering and checkout is easy and for orders of more than £70 shipping is free.
Thank you to Ufuud for our selection of Italian Specialties.
