Bowl of pizza fries

Pizza meet fries with my fabulous flavour packed easy recipe for a sumptuous takeaway style treat at home. These pizza fries are just SOOOO good.

A dish of pizza fries. One thick cut fry is held between a finger and thumb.

Pizza fries

We love our fully loaded fries. Topped with bacon, cheese and sour cream, they remind me of skiing holidays in the alps – something we’re missing at the moment. These pizza fries are a delicious variation on the theme, with the flavours of Southern Italy and the colours of the Italian tricolour.

This is a taste of homemade pizza without the fuss of making a base and with the added bonus of chips! Just the thing for an effortless Friday night indulgence in front of the TV.

I know chips sound really naughty, but as oven chips are baked rather than deep fried, there’s far less fat involved and you can afford to be good to yourself. So put your feet up with an Italian beer and enjoy a little treat. Surely we’re all due one of those?

Why you will love pizza fries

  • Pizza meets dirty fries – what is not to love?
  • They are SOOOOOO GOOOOD!
  • Using oven chips makes pizza fries easy and fuss free.
  • Homemade is always cheaper and far less calorific than take out.
  • They are adaptable – add your favourite pizza toppings to make them your own.

Pizza chips ingredients

The ingredients for pizza fries - oven fries, mozzarella, pizza sauce, sliced salami, grated cheddar
  • Oven chips – I usually buy mid-price branded ones, because I find they are far more regular in size than the budget supermarket version.
  • Pizza sauce – You can make your own, but the canned sauces from the big Italian brands are usually excellent. Find one that you like. Leftovers can be frozen to use for another meal. Stir in a few leaves of oregano if you like.   You could even use some homemade BBQ sauce!
  • Mozzarella – Drained and shredded.
  • Grated cheddar – I like a good fully flavoured cheese. Just get a block of supermarket own brand for cooking; you do not need expensive farmhouse cheese here.
  • Salami/pepperoni – Whichever you like, regular or spicy!
  • Basil – A few fresh leaves for garnish. (optional)

How to make pizza fries – the recipe

A top down picture of the ingredients for pizza fries - thick cut oven fries, pizza sauce, grated cheddar, mozzarella and sliced salami.

First grab the ingredients. Leave the salami out if for veggie fries and free to swap in your favourite toppings.

A picture from above of oven chips on a mesh baking tray, ready to be cooked.

Step One – Heat the oven and cook the fries according to the packet instructions, until they are golden.

Fuss Free Tip

We always cook our oven chips on one of those mesh oven trays, as these give far better results. They cost just a few pounds, go through the dishwasher and last for years!

A collage of six photos showing the stages of adding pizza topping to cooked oven fries: tomato sauce, then grated cheddar, salami, mozzarella and finally seasoning.

Step Two – When the chips are ready, transfer them to an oven-proof dish. (I like to use a cast-iron skillet.) Give them a good sprinkle of salt then layer on your toppings.

Step Three – Place the chips back in the oven for 5–10 minutes until the cheese has melted and is bubbling. Top with some ground black pepper and a few fresh basil leaves and serve.

Hints & Variations

You can, of course, make pizza fries however you like so vary them to match your favourite pizza recipe! Here are some suggestions:

  • Margherita – Just leave out the salami or pepperoni for a simple classic.
  • Hawaiian – Top with pizza sauce, chopped ham, pineapple and mozzarella.
  • Fiorentina – Top with torn up spinach leaves and a poached egg.
  • Four Seasons – Top with ham, fried mushrooms and artichoke hearts.
  • Oven Chips – Top with chopped olives and capers and add anchovies if you like them.

Easy Pizza Fries

Delicious pizza fries make a tempting treat for a lazy evening at home. Tastier, cheaper and healthier than takeaway and completely fuss free!
Servings: 2 people

Ingredients

  • 250 g frozen oven chips (thick cut)
  • 4 tbsp pizza tomato sauce
  • 50 g cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 8 slices salami
  • 50 g mozzarella (shredded)
  • fresh basil to garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Cook the oven chips according to the packet instructions. I find I get the best results by cooking them on a mesh tray.
  • When the chips are cooked, remove from the oven and transfer to a small oven-proof dish.
  • Build the pizza topping: cover the fries with the pizza sauce, grated cheddar, salami and mozzarella in turn.
  • Place the dish back in the oven. The pizza fries are ready after about ten minutes, when the topping is bubbling and the cheese is golden.
  • Season with black pepper, garnish with the basil and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For crispy chips cook them on a mesh tray – they cost just a few pounds and last forever.
  • Vary your pizza fries to match your favourite pizza recipe!
    • Napoli – Top with chopped olives and capers and add anchovies if you like them.
