The Coffee Bloody Mary – An astonishingly good combination of cold brew coffee and tomato juice – think of it as a grown up energy drink for the sophisticated palate.
OK. You really are going to have to trust me here, but this combination of cold brew coffee and tomato juice rocks. I was so skeptical until I tried it, and then I was smitten at first sip.
Firstly; if you have not tried cold brew coffee before then you must – it is a completely different drink from hot coffee which has been left to get cold. Cold brew coffee is sweet, delicate and without a hint of bitterness, or acidity, perfect for the summer months. Read our guide to perfect cold brew coffee here.
When making both cold brew coffee and our cold brew tea, we always use BRITA filtered water, it really does make a massive difference, the final drink is brighter, cleaner, fresher and clearer, appreciably different from making with tap water.
But back to this cold brew coffee and tomato juice combo… It really really works. In the same way that adding some chocolate to chilli works. The tomato, coffee, sour lemon juice and sweet sugar syrup all come together to make a harmonious whole. It is the perfect brunch drink – with or without hot coffee on the side – next time we’ll be adding a cheeky shot of vodka to make a coffee powered riff on a Bloody Mary. It’s a more sophisticated version of a Red Bull or other caffeine laden energy drink.
I wish I could claim credit for this recipe, but it was concocted by the Gentlemen Baristas for BRITA for this year’s London Coffee Week. It is so good – I urge you to make it!
Wake Up Mary - a cold brew coffee twist on a spiced tomato juice
- 75 ml cold brew coffee
- 15 ml lemon juice
- 75 ml tomato juice
- 15 ml sugar syrup
- To garnish
- Celery (rosemary, black pepper)
- Make the sugar syrup with 1 part sugar to 2 parts BRITA filtered water.
- Mix the ingredients together and serve in a tall glass with lots of ice.
This would also be delicious made with our festive spiced cold brew coffee.

It was amazing. I was so unsure, but it was lovely.
Stunning photography Helen, so crisp, and a really creative recipe.
Isn’t it a lovely creative recipe. We’ll be adding vodka next time we make it at the weekend.
Ohh now this sounds interesting, what an amazing sounding flavour explosion! x
It was astonishing. Really remarkable.
Helen, I like the sound of this more than I thought I would!
It is really really good. We were astonished.

I normally use a percolator to make coffee, but I would love to try the cold brewed coffee.
We love cold brew in the summer, it never fails to surprise and delight me just much variation in flavour there is with different brew methods.
I really will have to take your word for this because I am not a coffee lover or a tomato juice lover haha x
Probably not one for you then!
I really enjoyed reading this. I would have never thought of something like this for myself and I think I would love trying the range of flavours this has to offer.
I would have never thought of it too.
I love coffee so am curious as to what this tastes like – the combination doesn’t sound good – but you make it sound delicious! Kaz x
At first thought it really does not sound good, but actually it is really rather nice.
Ooh, I might like this drink! I’m new to cold brew coffee and this would be a fun way to experiment with it.
Cold brew is addictive right?

I had never thought of using coffee with tomato juice or a virgin mary but I bet it would give you the kick you need to stay awake.
It is really really good. Perfect for brunch.

Great looking drink! And an interesting flavor combination!
it works astonishingly well. I was staggered at just how good it was.
Beautiful photos! I’ve never tried cold brew, so I might start with that first?
Certainty go for cold brew first- it is mildly addictive.
Never heard of this mixture before. I’m intrigued in a slightly worried way!
Go for it! It was really really good

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Cold Brew lately, can’t wait to try it. I love tomato juice too, but am not sure of this combination?? I’ll keep an open mind…..
Make it! It is so good.
OK so when I read the title for this post I thought immediately Ewwwwww! Seriously she’s lost the plot!
But I happened to have a bit of cold brew at the cafe and I blitzed up a few tomatoes to make the tomato juice bit and my bloody heck it does work!
It really does work doesn’t it? Astonishingly well.
This is not something I would ever have thought of trying, but I am intrigued by it now!!
It is genius, I would have never thought it it, but it was so so good.
Now that’s a new one for me…!! I’m afraid tomato juice and I have never been friends, but your post has reminded me that I need to try some cold brew coffee this summer :)
That is such a shame – I adore tomato juice. Go for the cold brew – it will transform your summer.

I am not a fan of tomato juice at all but this would be a fantastic pick me up in the morning for someone that was! H x
it is an excellent pic me up. So unexpectedly good.
Not sure about cold brew, but I would like to try it
Cold brew is really worth trying, it is nothing like cold coffee.
I love the depth of flavour from cold brew but I have to have my coffee french pressed in the morning – Nice and Strong! Great idea with the tomato juice
It is amazing with the tomato juice.
This recipe sounds really intriguing. I’m not usually a coffee or tomato juice fan, but strangely I can see them working together.
They are amazing together! I really love both coffee and tomato juice but could not imagine how they would pair.
Interesting combination, I guess its one you have to try as imagination fails me. I do like my cold brewed coffee though
you really have to try it!
A coffee Bloody Mary? That sounds so wrong but I really, really want to give it a go! My go-to is usually the stove top espresso pot.
It does sound terribly wrong, but it is so so good!
I found it weird with the title but this looks interesting and yummy. I should try!
It does sound really strange, but it is so so good.
You’ve got me curious about trying cold brew coffee, it’s never sounded appealing until now! What a fantastic recipe and stunning photography.
Cold brew is completely different from cold coffee, and it will really surprise you when you try it.
This is interesting! I think my partner would like this.
let me know!
Wow! Helen this sounds incredible, I’m not a fan of the traditional Bloody Mary but think I’d love this.
It was amazing, it will become a regular for us.
I usually just have straight black coffee but im going to try this now
I am most definitely going to try this. Makes a change from the standard coffee style I am used to!
just plenty of hot water and good beans
Am I allowed to say from a coffee shop?!? We use a cafetiere most often at home, but we do have a hob-top espresso maker which I like.
Rebecca Howells (@PeanutHog)
The cold brew sounds good – would love to try it. Just use the coffee machine at the mo.
we use a coffee machine
donna l jones
water from the kettle with milk one sugar
My favourite is frothy cappuchino style
I use a filter machine to make coffee – that way it stays hot enough for me to drink over a period of time.
with a percolator never thought of a cold brew before, will be giving it ago
i’ve only ever brewed regular coffee with no added twists like this – might be brave and attempt one ha ! :)
It’s our weekend tradition to brew a cafetiere of coffee and have a slice of cake with it. Definitely trying cold brew though, especially now summer’s here
I use a cafetiere at home or instant if I’m in a hurry (most mornings!) This cold brew coffee sounds like a revelation though, i will have to try it!
wow I never would have thought of putting this combination together. I usually have my coffee instant, when I have more time from a percolator.would love to try this.
It is amazingly good.
I use a coffee machine, would love to experiment with other types
